Flowers for hot sun

Our patio gets intense sunlight all afternoon, with no shade. What are some annual flowers I can plant that will stand up to the sunlight?

I'm no expert, but back in ny we get really hot summers and the gardens that I had all got direct sunlight all day, no break till the sun went down. my most sucessful flowers were tiger lillies, and other variations of lillies as well as dwarf lillies which are great for the front of the garden bed, I don't suggest day lillies because they only bloom for one day. I loved my irises also they did extremely well. both of these flowers are strong and resillient and they multiply each year. I have irises planted at the cemetary, which I don't get a chance to frequent cause I live far away and every year there is more than the last. also I have roses which like full sun, a climbing rose bush is always a nice change. like I said I'm no expert but these have been growing strong in my garden for over 10 years and do well with transplanting. good luck, oh merigolds are always good too. they help keep away bugs deal well with the sun and you can save the seeds and use them again next year plus they are cheap

Hi Kathleen,
Zinnia, cosmos, marguarete daisy, verbena, salvia, melampodium, wave petunia, and aster come to mind.

Don't forget the succulents; sedum, sempervivum, and delosperma all love those situations. And any mediterranean plants (thymes, lavender, etc.) would like it too...

Hi Ilbatgirl,
It's always best to make a new post when it's a different question. Here's a couple of sites that tell you what you need to know about harvesting marigold seeds, what they look like and how to sow.
