Re: 2024 What's the Weather like Where You Are?

Yesterday, I got about a half inch of rain in the rain gauge, but it was enough to fill a rain barrel plus. My two rain barrels are at flood stage this morning so I had to release some water. That is the thing about rain barrels. It is feast or famine. I only set them up last week. I had about 2inches of water in the first barrel at that time. and 4 inches of rain in my rain gauge (cumulative). I just got the couplings and y splitter installed the other day and early yesterday, in the rain, I was able to connect the second barrel because the first was full. Today, both are full. That is why I had to let some of the water out. I don't have to water today. But I had missed watering last week. One of the lavenders died because it got too dry in a 4 inch pot and one of my cactus died because it got too much water over the last few weeks. It is 78 degrees, but at least the trades are turned on. It is overcast and there is a 40% chance of rain.

I might be easily humored, here in the pre-dawn darkness. The Weather Service predicted a 90% chance of rain for today in several days previous to this one. The entire Pacific NW coastal area and both sides of the Cascade Mountains is enveloped in rain (and probably snow at high elevations.

I didn't check Alaska and Hawaii but nowhere else on the radar map of the contiguous 48 states is there any noticeable rain with the exception of New Jersey. I thought of AppleStar :).

Continuing dry weather here with a 90% chance of rain and unless this storm drifts a little closer to the Rockies, it will miss us. Well ... there's tomorrow, we are told and with the growing season past, not any immediate need for rain/snow. Ever an optimist, but tiring of being a resident in Severe Drought.

YES! We sorely needed that bit of rain — 0.15” according to official reports for my area… and another 0.1” today, supposedly.

But more than the drought, there are several wildfires in our state that hopefully were dampened down at least a bit.

One is not too far south from here — maybe 30 min by car (On Friday, a shopping mall I had thought of going to was temporarily closed) — and the other is to the NE maybe 1~1-1/2 hrs.

Yesterday morning, I cajoled my tired self into getting ready to go out, opened the back door and was blasted by smokey air. Stepped back with idea of getting a Kn-95 mask, but realized the futility of even trying when my asthma threatened to manifest from just that little exposure. When I thought to look, the local Air Quality was in the orange.

So I stayed inside with my bedroom air filter.

It smells better out there today, so I’m hopeful to get some necessary tasks done. The forecast changed and now, we’re looking at overnight mid-20’s Wed morning and Thurs morning. — This calls for draining garden hoses and putting away clay pots, all vulnerable plants need to come inside or super-protected…. Wish me luck!

I got only .21" here overnight - not much, but something, at least, to wet the surface.

I can't get seed potatoes to go doormat when it is 75° every day and 50° every night. TV weather said our average temperature should be 41° now. We got about 1" of rain last night garden soil stays wet all the time with no 90° or 100° full sun weather. Garden plants and chickweed are loving this.

72 degrees at 6:20 a.m. It has been raining off and on most of the night. Yesterday, tapped off my rain barrel again because it was full. I may have to do that again today.

While you are waiting for your first frost. I am considering wearing socks to bed and wearing my blanket in the computer room. My version of winterizing. It has been raining intermittently for awhile, so I have to keep the umbrella handy. I already lost one. I don't have to go out often, but when I do, I try to go out between sprinkles.

I don't have to water the yard much, but I can't it work either. I have wild tomatoes, bitter melon, peppers, and cilantro popping up. Oh, yeah, the weeds are popping up too. I have to weed whack again when it dries out enough.

It didn't quite freeze here last night - 33° - but I'm still surprised that some of those things are alive out there! Many of those herbs usually die at even higher temps than this, but that's with dew on them every day, whereas this fall has been bone dry. One more freeze or near freeze, then temps go up again, but only a little above average.

Went down to 28°F here, but stayed above freezing inside the hoophouses and brick patio by the back door where some of the last of the container plants were huddled.

Snowing and, I think, a mix with rain.

The snow is on the lawn but, really, nowhere else. A couple of hours before sunrise and with 90% sky cover and an 80% chance of rain for the day, sunlight won't amount to much. It is 36⁰f (so, 2⁰C above freezing).

Radar presents a confusing picture. Swirling with storm clouds appearing to be moving from Vancouver BC both to the south and the northeast.

Lots of wind predicted for today. The WS is forecasting a stormy week and we will see if that amounts to much snow and how quickly it disappears with accompanying rain. Everything will vary with elevation.

Maybe a little late for snow. Yes, probably.

The Weather Service reports that nearest mountain SNOTEL has 22 inches of snow at 4700 feet. Schweitzer Mt Skiing is set to open on the 22nd. Don't forget to buy your tickets :D !

What I was noticing recently is that we have had below zero Fahrenheit weather during the first half of November several times since I moved downhill to this side of the ID/WA border, 40 years ago.

Precipitation is always chancy but this has been a warm Autumn with September being almost 6°f above daily normal temperatures and October at 3° above normal and we continue above normal. The first frost was late and we have had only 1 morning since that first frost in the low 20's F. The pink & blue hydrangea blossoms outside the living room window are frost damaged but they have been protected by being close to the house. The Million Bells in the hanging basket nearby has some blooms.

It is 70 degrees at 5 a.m. it has been raining off and on all night. It has been breezy 20 mph winds. There are more shower bands coming in on the radar. It did remain relatively sunny for a couple of days. Enough for the weeds to dry enough to weed whack them. But it was too windy to do Round Up, so I pulled a 32 gallon bag full of weeds. There's a lot more. I did see the bees out for those couple of sunny days, they were collecting nectar from my basil.

OMG, I'm hearing rain!! And I just heard thunder, as well! That main line was fairly short, and it went fast, but was orange and red, but getting back to the dark green now. I'll find out in the morning how much decided to come down.

We are very much on the outskirts of the bomb cyclone. Vanisle_BC would likely have a very different report from SW British Columbia.

Thousands lost electricity west of the Cascades with trees falling on power lines. The interstate highway pass received over a foot of snow but I think that it was mostly above freezing during the initial storm. That was true here, 200 miles east of that pass and our 1 ½" was melted and rained off by noon. The WS reported only ⅓" of precipitation total for yesterday altho we may have since had that much more. Wind gusts might have hit 30mph yesterday AM.

The atmospheric river is well to the south. Still, the prediction is for rain to continue for several days, ending, perhaps, with some snow and colder temperatures. No real drama here, so far.

It looks like I got just under an inch of rain overnight, and then about a quarter of an inch of light rain over the day. It finally stopped before 3 pm, but it has gotten very windy - I doubt there will be many more leaves left on the trees after these several windy days in the forecast! Tomorrow we are not supposed to be getting above 42°!

I walked around the garden just now — still lightly drizzling and pond and birdbaths water levels are definitely higher.

Could almost FEEL the general sigh of contentment and relief from the garden and trees. Everybody really needed this.

Just when I turned around to go inside, sun broke through (dipped below cloud cover in the gap above the horizon) with golden rays. Looked really pretty. I was almost tempted to go out front in the street for a better view to look for a rainbow … but didn’t. It’s probably out there somewhere. :D

It was very much like we had "turned a page" for November.

Yes, this is characteristic of a Mediterranean climate to have dry Summers. And, yes, for people in areas with higher annual precipitation, our recent rainfall numbers won't seem like much. However, our dry soil is soaking up this frequent, gentle rain.

Numbers: November total to yesterday for the month-to-date is 3.57 inches. Normal to this date is 1.48 inches.

Compared to monthly totals for the preceeding 4 months:
  • Oct .90" more than 1/3rd of that on the 31st
  • Sept .04"
  • Aug .26"
  • July .01"
So, double the amount of moisture of those 120 days AND the rain continues.

The rain total here, starting from that thunderstorm late Wednesday night, is up to just under 2¼". It stopped early Thursday morning, but in the early afternoon started up again, mostly mist, but eventually some steady rain, and there was supposedly some snow in the morning (before I got up!), but melting as soon as it hit. Then yesterday, the rain continued much of the day, until late afternoon, and a few times I could hear it blowing against the house. Today, the rain is gone, but the wind is back, with a vengeance! Warmer though - 42° yesterday, 54° today, a little warmer today, then up to at least 60° for a couple of days.

It is official. I need another blanket!

It is 63 degrees at 7:20 a.m. The overnight low got to 61 degrees. Day temps are about 80. It is a crisp and clear morning. My cat woke me up for breakfast. I thought it was too early but at 6:22 the sun wasn't quite up yet. I just came back upstairs and the sun is streaming a soft yellow glow through the windows into the living room and onto the stairs.

This is a view I rarely got to see when I was working, I went to work and came home in the dark and I hardly ever saw the sun during the day. At this time of the year the sun is lower so it comes through the windows at just the right angle.

I saw the bomb cyclone on the news. The rain we had a week ago was from the tail of it. Most of it passes above us. The ground was so dry it absorbed most of it. But the storm surge eroded more beach homes and caused a house to collapse. Some streams overflowed and flooded homes nearby and when there are storms like this trees come down, power goes out, and there are mudslides, but the Ala Wai was the worst anyone had seen strewn with trash. The Big Island got most of the rain and some roads were impassable from flooding and landslides. Before storms arrive, the city and state go out in advance and dredge as many of the problem streams they can and clear it of debris and the homeless camps. The homeless camps are a continuous problem. The camps start up again a few days later. The people just don't have anywhere else to go. Only one shelter here with tiny homes has a place for their pets. A lot of people would rather live on the street than give up their pets. There aren't enough places for everyone.

It is 62 degrees at 6 a.m. I am wrapped in my blanket throw. Sunrise is 6:49 a.m. today and it will get up to about 80 degrees. It should be another nice day. Next week a weak front is passing that will enhance trade showers but most of that will be on the windward side. Some showers may come over depending on the wind speeds. I have had to release water from my rain barrels three times already because they are already full (approx 100 gallons of water can be stored in two barrels.)

Got another 1/4" or so of rain in the morning, and I'm not sure that it stopped yet, but it's supposed to by around noon. Another warm day, around 60°, before temp drops, and Thanksgiving is supposed to be miserable, at least outside. But we do need rain...

It’s currently 18°F in the Spiral Garden (out in the open), and 21°F inside the Sunflower Hoophouse (above the floating fabric covering the plants). Working on getting readings from the other temp sensors….

8:50 pm it is 17° F outside already. Sky is crystal clear and moon looks like its is double its normal size. We have all the water faucets running. Our water bill says 100 gallons of water cost 55 cents. Water costs less than a plumber.

That’s odd. Normally I would brace for the kind of temperatures you’ve experienced to advance our way in a couple of days, but this time, things seem to be backwards.

I checked to be sure, and while we just HAD the 18°F temps in the last couple of days, we’re not expecting any more of that in the near future….

It was SUPER windy here yesterday. The house was shaking, the trees were “doing the waves”….

Our house is not what you might cal “solid” and loses heat quickly in when it’s gusting all day. So even though temps were in the 30’s but above freezing, the house heat was running all day just trying to keep up.

(I had to turn down the trailcam sensitivity — it took a couple hundred videos of roaring winds shaking the trees — no animals in sight)

I left my good thermometer outside all night 30 ft from the house, this morning at 7 am it reads 13°f. Channel 2 says it is 16° in Nashville and channel 4 says it is 15° in Nashville. My new digital remote thermometer still reads 5° wrong. We had high wind in the forecast the other day but it never got very windy. Wind is 4 mph today. Tomorrow forecast is 20°f. TV shows middle TN map 11° and 12° in several places south and east higher elevation.

I think there should be a way to calibrate your digital remote sensor.

Did it come with any instructions? The ones I use now can be adjusted via phone app. My older ones had a little knob or screw that you turn.

For ambient temp, you can compare with “good” one to match, my good kitchen instant thermometer/probe instruction said to put the probe in salted ice water for freezing temp calibration. And I can use THAT one as “control” for ambient temp as well.

Maybe putting the remote sensor on a block of ice would be a way to create a controlled temp. condition. And try measuring the same condition with the other one, too?

It is 74 degrees. It has been raining over night and off and on this morning. It is overcast. There is a band of showers that is stalled in the channel between Kauai and Oahu. Oahu will get the bulk of the rain while the eastern end of the island chain will be relatively dry. It should clear up a little tomorrow but more rain will be coming early next week.

It is a good slow rain that will soak into the ground. Enough that I won't need to water today, but it isn't enough to cause flooding. It will slow traffic a bit. People here don't know how to drive in the rain. I went out at 7:30 this morning and did my morning shopping, banking, and made a stop at the post office while the rain was on pause and before breakfast.

Wow. Yeah, looking at the maps, I’m guessing we’re still getting some ocean effect push back to moderate the cold front due to the the tidal rivers and bays. It seems like you are more inland and also might get the mountain top cold coming down to lower levels….?

They said that yesterday was the coldest in the area since January 22nd, and every day in December has been below average, along with these winds we've had! Getting to 40° today - warmer than the last 2 days, but still well below average, and 53° is the forecast high for Sunday. Some rain forecast for Monday and Wednesday, which is good, since it is still very dry around here. Tuesday is supposed to be the nicest, getting up to 57°, and clear.

It is 64 degrees with a few trade showers on the radar. The surface trough has dissipated so it should be sunny today. At least until the next high pressure ridge gets here in a few days. The high will be about 80 degrees today.

The radar image is interesting. There are shower bands above and below but I am in a relatively dry spot in the middle there is an anticyclonic dry air mass off the West Coast. I have not seen that before, so I have no idea what that means.

The daily temperatures are a little warmer than usual and even though my rain barrels are full, it is less rain than normal. At least most of the rain we have had has been the good soaking rain.

Our TV weather reports are saying the same thing. Our summers are hotter than average and dryer than average. Our winters are colder than average and spring is wetter than average. This summer we had 1 month of no rain then 4" of rain, then another month of no rain then 8½" of rain. My garden friend 1 miles away had 4" of rain when we had 8½" That is a very big different 4½" a distance of 1 mile away. I expected the dry stream to have 30 ft of water after the 8½" rain but it stayed dry. TWRA said on TV, 3 months of drought soil soaked up all the rain there is no run off into streams and rivers that is why streams stayed dry. Our Spring Feb to May use to get 3' to 4' of rain in 3 or 4 months. About 25 years ago in July we had 5 days of 107° and 3 days of 109°. I think it was 2 or 3 years ago we had a month if 100° in July. It has taken me 47 years to learn how to grow a garden in a desert that gets flash flood rain.

Clouds and dismal daytimes continue but they did produce a little rain, yesterday.

For the first time since 1 December, the temperature rose above freezing. Days (& Nights) with the thermometer hovering just below freezing.

Apparently, the ground has become little frozen and the greenhouse produced the silliest anomaly this morning ;). Still hours before "sunrise" but the unheated greenhouse was 33°f while the outdoor temperature was 34°f. In other words, the protected greenhouse environment retains a little heat (probably from the soil covered) but gained no heat from the rain & clouds Saturday and was cooler than the outdoors overnight. So, the structure protected the interior from the pathetic warming outdoors  !

Another day in paradise. It is 81 degrees at 3 pm. It has been sunny all day and humidity is 49% literally no sweat. The next few days should be more of the same with the nights around 68 degrees and days around 80. Most of the showers will come overnight. I will have to water, but because it is so cool, the soil is not drying out very fast so I can water most things every couple of days. Only the smaller pots and the pot bound pots will need to be watered daily. I guess that is a hint. I should be dividing some things and potting up. I watered my succulents today. I have a crocus blooming. Wow! I did not even know what that was in the succulent pot. I left the pots to dry out in the sun for a couple of hours before moving them under cover. They only need to be watered once a week.
