refrigerate tomatoes or not

My tomato friend says to never put tomatoes in the fridge.
Is she right?
What do you do?

She's right. Tomatoes loose their flavour when kept in the fridge. I just keep mine in a basket and try to eat them ASAP :)

If you have lots: cook them down with other things for freezing as pasta sauce.

If you have few: even just microwaving them with a little canned broth, blending, adding shredded cheese, sprinkle of garlic salt, sprig of basil or parsley, reheating, croutons -- soup!

Yeah, tomato soup is my favorite. Stewed tomatoes with onions is good too.

I'm making some tomato veggie soup later today.

Sometimes I refrigerate my tomatoes if I'm busy and think they will get moldy if I don't refrigerate them. I think that's reasonable.

Gotta get used to surplus, Birdlover.

It's just one of the burdens a gardener has to bear.

I used to put tomatoes in the fridge but not any more. Tomatoes and warm season crops freeze in the cold and tomatoes get more mealy if they are in the refrigerator. I only refrigerate them to cool them just before I am going to eat them. They can stay on the counter for weeks especially if you have a cooler spot. Long keeper was good on the counter for 6 months.

I have three tomatoes and sometimes I still have too much.

Soup, tomato sauce, give them away, sun dry, dehydrate, chop them up and put them in omelettes, soups, stews, casseroles and cook and freeze meals.

Tomatoes are good for so many things.

Recently, I had some papaya in my mini fridge that tends to freeze things that are not in the freezer part (grrrrr) & found out accidentally that frozen papaya is really good. So now I cut up papaya & keep it in the freezer. Frozen papaya chunks make an excellent summertime snack. And the seeds are good to eat too, so healthy with their cache of enzymes. The seeds have such an interesting flavor. I haven't tried freezing the seeds yet. I think it freezing them would turn them to mush.
