Life long friend, a smoker has stage 4 cancer, I am sad.

One of my life long best friends has stage four cancer, it started in his lungs and has spread. He has smoked ever since I have known him, so I am sure he is another tobacco victim. I see young people smoking and I just think how dumb are they, like there is not enough information that it so bad for your health.

It is hard to lose anyone, at any time, I have a couple of friends who have been cancer survivors. They both actually had skin cancers. One of them still goes for treatments and the other has to go in for surveillance.

It is just a reminder that every day is precious, make every minute count.

I lost a dear friend to metastasized lung cancer a couple months ago and a relative the same way last year, both who had smoked since teenagers. It is an awful, painful, protracted death. It makes me very sad to see my friends that still smoke even though they know better. If you smoke long enough, it will get you eventually, unless something else gets you first.

I read that about 350,000 people die each year from smoking.

So very sorry to hear about your best friend tomf. So hard to come to terms with for sure.

One of my best friends at the moment is going through the same thing. She had chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but unfortunately not successful. It is so very sad to see her decline, as sure it would be for you as well, seeing your best friend suffering in this way.

Thank you tomf. If only there was a magic cure for all cancers. Sadly though this happens to many.

Tom. I'm sorry.

My youngest child married an oldest son. So, her mother in law was only in her 50's. A smoker, she died at 53, just a few months ago.

It was a fairly quick downhill slide for her, after the lung cancer diagnosis. She was only seriously ill for about a year.

If I'm lucky, I will live out an average lifespan. It will only be a few more years until my oldest child is in his 50's. In other words, I will have lived another generation beyond what this woman did. At 96, my father is still alive and somewhat active.

Dad and I both smoked and quit. I can testify that after 20 years, it was not easy for me to quit.

As a kid, it might have been difficult to tell me that walking around with a bad smell wasn't sophisticated. I might not have believed that offering a friend a poison in the form of a cigarette wasn't a sign of friendship. It was neither sophisticated, friendly nor even bold for me to smoke.

We all make good and bad choices in life. It's a shame that some choices so shorten the time we have.

Steve

I am pushing 70 and in excellent health. All the people in my grandparents' generation (mother's side) lived into their 90's or 100's. This was the generation that was born before or just after the turn of the 20th century, before processed foods, electronic entertainment, and going everywhere in cars. My mother, however, died when she was 57 of colon cancer. I really think this was due to eating nothing but processed food (mostly TV dinners) and getting no exercise (TV). She never smoked or drank, but otherwise did not live much of a healthy life style. So even though she had genetics on her side, she died early.

When you get to be my age, the rewards and punishments of how you have been living your life show up more. I do know a lot of people my age or younger who are dying (scary!).

I see so many people so out of shape, the kids today I fear for when they get older, as they eat wrong, sit in doors and so many smoke; the experts are already saying they wil not live as long as thier parents.
