Nothing. The bumps on the stem are root primordia. If you would bury the stem, those bumps would grow out in to actual roots. Tomato is one of the few plants that has the ability to root all along the stem like that. That is why we always say when ever you transplant tomatoes, burying them deeper than they were before. That gives it a more extensive root system.
