Need more info on Peat & composted manure mix?
I bought this mix in a 40 pound bag at Agway like $3.50 and want to know if anyone has used it before for seedlings or anything? What do you think of it? The mix is very brown and soft and eay to work with! Its a .01 of all three NPP in fertilize ratings! I guess its mild and won't hurt anything. Does it hold moisture better than just peat? So what are the advantages?
I mix up my own soiless mix. The addition of sifted finished compost can (but does not always) reduce the hydrophobia peat sometimes has.
I try to not buy soiless mix with surfactants to get around the resistance to take up water, that is the root of all of this.
Boiling hot water added to the bale of peat and alowed to penetrate (and cool) works for me. And doesn't use chemicals I can't pronounce, or know what-in-heck they are.
I guess what I'm selling is try a little of your preffered soiless mix, and if it doesn't hydrate, try the hot water trick.
If you like your new mix, go for it!
