can I transplant this tree
My town recently dug up a japanese maple tree and I want to save it. They didn't take care when they dug it up so the roots were cut and some bark peeled. I have it in a shady place and am keeping it moist for now. It is about ten ft. tall and 15 to 20 ft. wide. Is it possible to save it?

I would not be too optimistic about the changes that it will survive. The size of the lump left (if at all) is extremely important. Having said that, you can always give it a try.
If it still has substantial roots left it may be able to survive.
Keep the soil most but not wet because the cut rotes can easily attract fungi.
Also try to repair the bark. As a minimum with clay and perhaps some cloth around it.
And then hope and pray.
Regarding the magnolia tree same problem. A tree of that size would probably require a lump of at least 27 cubic feet (3 by 3 by 3 feet I mean, that is about one cubic meter).
