Too late to save them?

We were gone all weekend and my poor plants were neglected. In two days my sunflowers grew 2" and completely flopped over. :( Is there anything I can do to make them stand up again or am I SOL?

I've heard that sunflowers are tricky to start indoors. You CAN bury them up to the seed leaves though. Your main challenge will be when you transplant them, I think.

If you look at my Sunflower& House thread in Permaculture Forum, I started them by early -- a week before last avg frost I think, but check that thread for accuracy -- digging out a hole with a bulb planter 4" deep and planting in the bottom of the hole, then covering each hole with a cut off 2L soda bottle. Adjusted temp by removing or screwing on the caps until temps stabilized and the hotcaps were no longer necessary. After they grew, I filled in the holes with sand/soil mixture up to their cotyldons.

That's a good idea thanks AS. I hope the ones I planted for my SIL survive ok until they can go out.....in a month "groan"

Good luck! They do well when hilled like corn.

The two giant "Sentinels" pictured in the thread I mentioned never fell over even through the summer storms. 8)
