How to keep roses fresh in vases for a long time?

Hi friends

I received a beautiful bouquet of red long stem roses. My question is how to you make roses last a long time in the vase as they tend to die quicker than most flowers?

Any suggestions?

The answer to this question may be very common but I don't know :(
Thankyou :)

Well long time is relative term; you are right, they are pretty short lived. The main thing is that roses from a florist should come with a little packet of flower food. Be sure you get them in water right away and use the packet. If they give you two packets, save the second one for when you change the water, which you should do every second or third day.

A lot of people recommend a little sugar in the water (which may be what is in the packet, I have no idea).

I've heard aspirin and all kinds of other things, but have never seen any evidence for their use.

Yes... sugar works well, but what I have also found works well is to put a penny in the bottom of the vase. It sounds silly, but aparently the metals in the penny (zinc, copper etc.) are the same metals that go toward bloom production in flowers. So between the sugar and the penny, your flowers should last quite a while.

One thing I find that helps all cut flowers last longer is to make sure the vase is freshly cleaned before use to make sure no bacteria are lurking. I like using bicarb of soda to clean glass vases as it brings them up sparkly.
