Thank you Eric. That's closer than anything I've found, so far, but I'm not sure. Here is better photo of the leaf, where you can see small leaves sprouting on the stem.

taxonomically, in this case, the whole 'stem' and all the little side-leaflets and the big one on the end would definitely all be considered one leaf. reminds me of the first-year growth of some of the biennial wild mustards...

It kind of looks like an aven (Geum spp.). Possibly macrophyllum?

Think you might have it! I was thinking white avens, which is my local one, but it wasn't quite right.

Could be for all I know! I have no idea what species of Geum grow in Michigan - I just went with a species I'm familiar with.
