Japanese beetles killing lawn?

About 4 (maybe 5) years ago, sections of our lawn (10ftx10ft) just up and died. Later that first year, we were inundated with Japanese beetles. When I got around to fixing that area, the sod peeled up like pieces of carpet. I had an idea, conferred with a friend who's knowledgeable & it sounded like we had a grub problem. The grubs eat the grass roots & that's why it peels up. I could confirm this by digging about an inch .. maybe 2 & should see the grubs. Treat them by trying some 'off the shelf' grub control and follow the directions. I did dig down about 2 inches, never saw anything but treated the area anyway. After 2 months, I used topsoil, to patch the area, used fresh grass seed & nothing grew. I'd used the topsoil to patch other areas with no problems.

To make this short, after more dead areas showed up year after year, we began to notice masses of Japanese beetles on the ground. That's when I did a little 'research' & found that they do 'inhabit' lawns & their grubs will destroy a lawn in no time.

I don't know if they do something to the soil besides eat the grass roots, but it took 2 years for the grass to start growing in that first area.

We can't afford to have a professional do this. I've been told you can treat lawns with 'over the shelf' products, but it'll take a few years of treatment & you need to do the whole lawn; not just areas.

Any thoughts or help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!!

Can you purchase Paenibacillus popilliae? (milky spore disease).
It is a biological control that they are susceptible to whilst in larval form.

Y'know, I've heard of that stuff . . milky spore disease. I never bothered to follow through on it . . mainly since I thought I was having my leg pulled. I will check into it.

Thank you much for the response!

here is some information on it.
https://www.biconet.com/biocontrol/bpopillae.html
Takes a while to have an effect but will then be present in your soil for many years.
Good luck! :D
