I like Kirby cucumbers for pickling. They have a nice thick skin that adds to a nice crispy bite. Hmmmm....my mouth is watering just thinking of it!

Have gotten good results from a number of different kinds of pickling cakes - bootheby's blonde (a white one) is the only variety name i remember at the moment.

Making sure there's a source of tannin added helps a lot with retaining crunchiness too, especially with fermented pickles: have used grape, cherry, plum, and oak leaves all to good effect. A friend swears by a bit of black tea leaf.

I have grown straight eights for years. they are heirlooms, so seed saving is doable if you want small whole pickles, they can be picked small. or I can recommend a.c.picklers, another heirloom that doesn't grow very big. check out seedsavers.org they have lots of heirlooms of all varieties and have served me very well over the years.

Pioneer Pickling would be a good one.

I have also used Straight Eight when small.
