Metal trellis for Clematis

My father made me a metal trellis for my clematis. I would like to paint it black, but my aunt tells me that black will get too hot from the sun and will hurt the vines. Should I paint it white instead? We are in Minnesota and it will go on the south side of our house. I have other perenials planted around the base of the clematis to shade the roots.

Every year I plant black eye susan vine to climb up black metal shepard hooks in a full sun setting and they do fine.

The top of a Clematis doesn't mind the heat; it's the roots you need to keep cool. Mine is on a black metal trellis...
