Coral Cactus "Cristata"

It was the first plant I got. I'm not entirely sure of when to water it. I thought perhaps once a week. I'm afraid of overwatering.

That looks just like the one I bought a little while back. They sure are different looking. I was told to make sure NOT to over water it. But to be honest, with that gravel on there, I'm not really sure how often to water either. I think I may take the gravel off the top, but not sure if I should??? I have been letting it get good and thirsty before watering it. I seem to kill more plants by giving them too much water, than not enough.
