Hi all, i,m having problems identifying a plant in my garden

Mon Jun 07, 2010 8:01 pm

Hello all, I am new to gardening, or should I say growing and caring for plants, I planted around 200 bulbs in march and now have some great flowers appearing, but there is one that I am not sure about, it looks like some sort of cabbage, but to my eyes it looks like a weed, can anybody help me figure this out please! I have photos, but know not how to post them!

That doesn't look like the sort that grows from a bulb.... I can't think what it might be though. :|

I just pull them out. I pull anything I didn't plant.

Hhm..I'm not so sure that it is lettuce..

It looks very very familiar to me, but I just can't remember like what.. :? .

@quietjedi,
You can wait and see if it flowers (if it will). Or you can carefully dig it out and check if it was indeed one of your bulbs or not. Then you can decide what to do with it.
But personally, I wouldn't just pull it out, it might become something pretty, even if I didn't plant it :wink: :idea: ..

I don't know what it is, but you might try looking at pictures of Heracleum spp, or hogweed. There are many species, and some of them seem to have that gray-green color.

I think it is related to this plant, I think it is a type of wild lettuce

We plant it and eat it as vegetable.

Isn't that Hawkweed (my DD has been calling them "Dandelion Look-alike" because the flowers look exactly like Dendelion flowers)? I have several springing up around the garden and have been thinking they look edible... At what stage do you eat them and how?

Wild lettuce is usually referred to the more bitter fellows of the garden lettuce we eat.. So what YOU can do is to just taste it!! LOL. ...only have your phone close to you if you need to call the 911, ..in case it's poisonous.. :lol:

But indeed, let's all hope this (lettuce?) will have pretty flowers soon! :wink:
Let us know! :)

Were you asking me? We only pluck the young leaves ( starting the fifth leaf counting from the top, we let the shoot continue growing). We pluck 5 or more leaves below the fourth leaf from each plant . We just wash the leaves and cut them into smaller pieces and fry them like any other leafy vegetables.
