edging for a knot garden

I was reading an article on knot gardens and they recommended using a "metal edging" for their garden, is this necessary and where would I purchase it. The only edging I have seen is plastic.

Aluminum edging is readily available to the trade at wholesale yards and the like, but it hasn't really made it to the retail side that I've seen. I do like it better than plastic, but I've become a big fan of Trex edging, the same stuff they make decks from; I think using a recycled product in the garden makes it greener yet and it's pretty widely available at most of the big boxes, so there's another alternative to plastic. You may be able to get a local landscaper to supply you with the metal, but check out the Trex; it's cheaper and will last longer (a little more work but worth it in the long run...)
