Identify please!

I live in N.C., and I found this plant growing but they all had this thing on them at the same part of the plant on all the plants. it is 1-2 feet tall. Take a look.

hassenpfeffer,

I'm far from certain but I get the impression that this is not part of the plants normal growth. Perhaps it is a gall of some sort possibly caused by an insect.

Yeah I thought that too but they ALL have it at least all the ones I've seen have it.
