Why are you concerned about how big your neighbor's frruit trees are going to be? Are they planted close to the property line? Worried they'll shade your garden?

Fruit tree size depends on the kind of fruit tree. Also, most fruit trees are grafted and the kind of root stock will determine whether it will be standard size for the kind of tree it is, semi-dwarf (about 1/2~2/3 the size), or dwarf (about 1/3~1/2 the size). There are also genetic dwarf varieties -- usually called "Patio" or "Garden" size -- of each kind of fruit tree that only grows to about 6' tall.

The size of fruit trees are also determined by how they are pruned, no matter what the potential mature size.

A word to the wise Starflare. I have learned to do most of my gardening on my side of the fence. Even if you are right, folks can be ornery about their plantings; no matter how badly they have done it, it is theirs and they will defend it to the death. Best to leave the sleeping dogs lie...

I understand, really I do...

My neighbor has a mountain ash (they call them rowans in England) that is old and diseased, and hangs over my driveway. The branches drop, and the birds eat the berries and do the greenapple quickstep all over my car  .

I have mentioned it a few times, very casually, and the last time we talked she said she couldn't do it (she is retired and on limited income) but if I wanted to have at it, she would be fine with that. All that zucchini and lettuce I plied her with last year has come back to me in good relations and simple solutions. :D Try it, it's easy and fun...
