If the plant is in good health, there is no time like the present. As far as how to prune I suppose it depends upon what you are trying to accomplish. This species can be cut back hard, and by hard I mean within a few inches of the soil. One of our members recommends pruning along with defoliation in order to stimulate the maximum number of new shoots. If you are going to cut it back to just the trunk that implies defoliation by definition.
