uzeyr,

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but my Pine seedlings, started in 2006, are not doing much yet either. I re-potted half and half were left untouched, both groups are just starting to show sings of life. This is odd because trees in the ground have already extended their candles. This is just the opposite of what I see in deciduous trees where the potted ones seem to begin growth earlier. :? Does anyone have any ideas?

The Pines I have planted in my yard have just recently (this week) started to show any signs of growth. I live in USDA zone 7.

I know (from his posts) that Norm takes optimal care of his trees and puts them in the best environment for growth.

Hopefully your trees are just waking up, a bit slower than normal.

uzeyr,

One of my, recently re-potted, Pines blew out of the pot today in some strong winds and I was forced to re-pot it. New root tips were just forming. I don't know why they are so late but it think everything will be OK, at least I am still hopeful.

woah that was a close call
when u repotted didnt u secure the tree with wire I think that works,
any way also I just noticed the type of housing in uk is closely packed and a consequence is that there is a little direct sunlight penetration on most days at least at the momment will the pine die if not kept in full sun all teh time because due to the buildings here its jsut hard to get direct sun
thats not to say it doesnt happen , it does but not all the time wil this affect the black pine ?

uzeyr,

My Pines are Scots Pines, not JBP. I do keep them in full sun though. I think you should try to find the sunniest location for yours that you can.

It is probably good to remember that the name for JBP in Japan is mutsu which also means "waiting". Sometimes pines are just about waiting. :)

uzeyr,

How is your Pine looking now? The candles on mine are extending and I think they are going to be OK.

ok two updates
I cut some wire out of the tree and it had almost begun to bite in would u say I should take off all the wire ( some looks really loose ) ??
also the pine had some sap leaking from it, it was really hot so could this be why ? any way the pines look a lot weaker than they had when they were sent to me I mean some needles are browning and falling off :(
I am thinking of getting another one really good deal but am scared that it might follow suit of the other two help please ?

This is a weird year, all my bonsai have gone through leaf fall, and a few of them bud extension but now on some of them the buds are breaking! Winters one month away and some of the Japanese maples are leafing....

I gave up on the pines I've had because I just couldnt get them to grow well, and I didn't want to wait 50 years for a good tree.

I cut the leafing buds off, hope that puts them back into dormancy

I found when I took wire off pines even when it hadn't bitten in the needles browned off, I have no idea why I cant make them happy :(

thanx for replying I really need advice on the matter
so yeah
I didn't want to wait 50 years for a good tree.
well I got myself a fully grown bonsai so I don't need to style it just keep it in shape
the wires was on even when the needles began browning , and am goign to get rid of all the wire since the branches seem to have set
can the braches revert back ?
the pines one of them has begun extending needles I don't see buds or candles though that is the one with browning needles
the other one has no brown needles but no growth :/ but according to me they are the most beautiful type of bonsai so I'm keen on keeping them maybe buying another one :)

also I wanted to ask and this is an open question
the watering I mean they have grass growing and it sort of dying now coz they are in full sun and one has a really shallow pot
I'm confused about watering I only water when the soil gets bone dry like scratch it and its dry then I heavily water but I did that yesterday and today ( it was sunny and hot ) the pot was dry again I had to water :/ so I was unsure
any help /advice on watering the black pine bonsai ?

In the summer time it not only gets hot here, but we get a breeze/wind that drys my soil out fast. Here is a neat trick I use when I notice my soil is drying out to fast, and I don't want to water during the hottest part of the day.

Take a piece of news paper and cut a slit in it to the center point.

Then slide it over your pot and around the trunk of your tree.

Then tuck the edges/corners of the news paper under your pot and mist the news paper down to get it wet.

During the day I re-wet the news paper, but not wet enough that water runs into the soil. I have found that this helps keep my soil from going bone dry during the hottest parts of the day.

At night or on cooler days I take the news paper off, I don't leave the paper on longer than it needs to be.

I thought this might help, if your soil is drying out to fast.

P.S. this is only used on my outdoor trees during the hottest parts of summer.

You shouldn't let your bonsai get bone dry, JBP like evenly moist soil, not damp but not bone dry. Maybe this is the reason some needles are browning but it could also be the natural cycle of the tree.

The branches can revert back, on my trees I take the wire off just as it begins to bite in then once the branch has healed, reapply wire. I find the branches then stay in position after the 2nd sometimes 3rd time.

I think you should wait and be patient when it comes to the buds, the saying 'late bloomer' doesn't come from nowhere

Yes I would buy a mature pine bonsai, I just couldn't wait for seedlings or cuttings. In fact I found a specialist nursery that has tons of different varieties of pines, if these pines were at a bonsai nursery I would expect to pay 100% more! I will get a pine, as I feel my collection is incomplete without one
