Yup, just wanted to share. I've never had a plant before and in a wierd way I'm already kind of proud of it. It's really much like caring for an animal in some ways.

Oh, and I now that I have your attention, I have a question. The window next to the plant (which can be seen best in the pic on my other post), is at an angle. It's a North window and therefore doesnt offer very good lighting at all. I could easily move my plant to a South window but this could cause multiple problems such as the plant not responding well to being relocated, as well as me being just plain worried my cats will get at the plant. I'd like to keep it in my room if at all possible.
Should I invest in a fluorescent lamp to prop above the plant? It's lost a few leaves since I got it 2 nights ago, but my suspicion is that it was due to being relocated while having to travel in a winter (WINNIPEG) climate.

Any advice would be more than appreciated, as I'm very much a beginner at this. Thanks!

SaturnsPattern,

The North window is not ideal, the Southern one would be better. If that is not easy for you then yes a fluorescent fixture would help. Since it's only been with you for a few days I don't see any problem moving it again. FWIW I don't have much problem with my Ficus dropping leaves when moved inside/outside although others report they do.

P.S. It looks like your soil is ready to be watered. Read the thread on basic care for watering tips, it can be found here.

Wow that thing has a HUGE root.

Oh and they do pretty well with artificial light given its the right type.

$20 Ott-lite put it 1 - 2 feet away :-)

LET THERE BE LIGHT! :D

Alright, so I managed to find a 15 watt fluorescent lamp at a department store. It actually compliments the size of the plant quite nicely. Don't mind the Pokemon poster, it's actually more of a joke than anything.

I wasn't sure how to mount the lamp, so I hung it from the top of my wall. This way I was able to have the lamp completely centered, and I could alter exactly how distant the lamp was from my plant. Overall I'm extremely pleased.

Hopefully now my plant can remain healthy.
