Meadow instead of lawn?
I recently moved into a house whose back yard has a lot of sand and scraggly grass. The previous owners had two great danes they kept in a pen back there. Since I live alone and am trying to cut down on maintenance, I was thinking of putting some compost or soil down and planting wildflowers that I won't have to mow. Has anyone done this?
Can you tell us a little more about your area - sunny or shady, dry/average/moist, size, city/rural setting, etc. Are you thinking of starting with seeds or plants?

I think your idea will work very well, but it is more work than most people think to get it going. After the first year though, it really will cut down on the maintenance and will be a very pleasant view.
