Scarlet Cup Fungus

This last weekend I was clearing out some underbrush and digging a hole to plant an apple tree...I saw a bright red fungus I hadn't seen before. I looked it up...it's a Scarlet Cup Fungus.

I got a kick out that bright red on cold, wet, gray afternoon.

Thanks marlingardener and butterflylady. This week I had a little more color to brighten up the place....to continue the theme of "red" here's a shot of two red-breasted sapsuckers on a red alder! Take a look at the holes in the branch to get an idea of why it's called red alder.

It's a real treat to get a picture of these two.

That's a great photo :D I don't know if we get those birds around here and I've never seen them before. Very cool.

It was hard to see the red holes.
