My son as well as I need help. I can find the fraction of a num like 1/4 of 20 that is easy it's 5.
What I am having problems with is finding the fraction of mixed numbers like 1/4 of 5 3/8.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
thanks

my math may be rusty but I hope this is right
If you are using a calculator
5 3/8 = 5.375 ( 3/8= .375)
5.375 * 0.25 = 1.3475
converting fractions
5 3/8 = 43/8
43/8 * 1/4 = 43/32
= 1 11/32
Using the calculator 11/32=0.3475. It works
reported as a proper fraction 5 3/8 divided by 1/4 = 43/8*1/4= 43/32 = 1 and 11/32 remainder.

Awww.... I got here too late for the party! This stuff is fun! So yeah every one is right. You deal with the mixed number by unmixing it. Convert the 5 in 5 3/8 into 8ths = 40, so 5 3/8 = 43/8 ths. Then you can do whatever you need to with it. One fourth of 43/8ths = 43/8 divided by 4 = 43/8x4 = 43/32 = 1 and 11/32.
