Is this wheat?? Or Quack Grass??
We have these clumps of "grass" growing everywhere. We are in North Texas and things have just started to green up but we don't recall having this last spring. We have a new neighbor who planted wheat in his pasture next door. He doesn't irrigate his pasture so we can't compare what we have with what he might have planted plus his horses are eating everything that pops up. We on the other hand have this stuff growing wherever we irrigate. The grassy clumps stay pretty low and sprawling but long pieces that head out are tall, in some places reaching about 2 feet along a fence we have where it wasn't mowed down. If this is wheat we figure it will die out soon and we wonder if it might even be beneficial to the soil. But it kind of looks like quackgrass too. Thanks for any help!
Agreed: it is not wheat. I grew wheat out by the street a couple of years ago. It's much more vertical / narrow / goal-oriented than this stuff. sorry.... You can test for yourself by purchasing maybe a half-ounce at a "whole food / health food" type store. "Whole wheat berries" is what they're often called when sold for cooking. Then plant them like seeds in pots so you'll remember which ones they are.
When they come up, you'll be able to see what wheat looks like.

Looks to be True Cheat. Many people get it and Downy Brome confused. They are both winter annuals in wheat fields.
