I know nothing about corn shellers. My son used a piece of pvc pipe with some notches cut in the face. Just kinds screw it on the cob to knock out the kernels. I just use hands, twist one this way the other the opposite. I guess there is probably a threshing machine available?
I suppose you want to grind dry corn into meal or flour? It will grind corn just fine too.

Oh wow... I would have never thought I would have a use for a corn sheller, since I have no room to grow corn. But my big old black walnut tree drops a 1000 walnuts every year. I've never done anything with them, but leave them for the squirrels, because they are such a pain to get out of the shell. But I've always thought that it is part of the bounty of my land and I should be using some of them.
This is really tempting...

My four legged hairy children are more of a PITA when it comes to shelling corn. They consider their stomach the storage bucket.soil wrote:We call our Shellers slaves.. Um I mean children.... Um happy workers I mean.
I have 100 lbs of painted mountain to process I'm going to build my own rig.
I'll have maybe 20 lbs. when all is said and done. Next year 200 lbs. This was the first year with Painted Mountain. Easy to grow, less water and taste good too.
Soil, To bad you don't post more pictures. I'd like to see your beyond organic life style.

The two legged kids know how good the corn tastes when it's turned into masa and then tortillas or tamales. It's the wheat berries they just eat down.My four legged hairy children are more of a PITA when it comes to shelling corn. They consider their stomach the storage bucket.

I found the painted mountain to be real drought tolerant. Next year I'm going try dry cropping the first batch next year. And since it's 60 days I'm going to squeeze in another too.
Did you get massive diversity in the cobs? I got every color imaginable, and on top of that excellent traits I didn't know corn could have. Like five cobs per ear. Or kernels on the tassels.
It would be a lot easier to post pics if we could just upload them to each post. I barely have time to sit here and chat let alone make photo Iliad sites and tinker with all that. Because I'd like to show the world.

Yes, We were told that the new upgraded server would have spell check and direct photo upload. Oh well. The time is way off too.soil wrote:

I had a few double and just one triple ear. The colors are fantastic. I especially like the ones with multi colored kernels.

Painted Mountain is a flour corn. I do a coarse grind. Meal.

Bob's Red MIll corn meal is pretty good, but there is nothing like home gown.
I don't grind the kernels until I'm ready to use them. Don't want them to oxidize.

The sheller arrived.
It's a real thing of beauty, not the plastic junk of today.

It is what it is and nothing more. It doesn't try to be anything else.soil wrote:Wow that thing sure is abstract.
I don't have it mounted to a box, so I can't demonstrate. Take a look at this Youtube video. This guy really gets into his work.

Take a basic southern cornbread recipe and doctor up.
I browned up some hamburger with a whole small head of garlic. Then I moved this to a bowl and added shredded pepperjack cheese and red enchilada sauce.
Heat up your cast iron skillet in the oven with butter. Pour the southern recipe batter into the hot skillet and then sprinkle the meat mixer over the top. The meat mixer will sink in as the cornbread raises.
The recipe I use, calls for pouring a cup of whole milk in on top of the batter. I eliminated this step do to the cheese and enchilada sauce.
Just playing around with flavors. It can be tweaked.
