Ficus or Serissa?

I tried to save my mates Ficus, unfortunately it didn't make it, but a few shoots came from the soil so I repotted them.

The larger of the 2 pics has 3 main shoots, is this normal it is also starting to flower ???

The smaller of the 2 was a cutting from the bigger one & has grown more shoots, is this one plant or will it grow more than 1 ???

Cheers for any info, much appreciated :-D

Mr Miagi,
Welcome, I am not sure what your title 'Ficus Serissa' indicates as they are two entirely differing species of tree.

These do not look like Serissa to me.. Or possibly [excepting one leaf] even much like Ficus though it is hard to tell from the size of the pictures [As they are not clickable thumbnails].

Also I am not entirely sure what your asking, Seeing as how you rooted one cutting each, You have one plant in each pot.

Please clarify this for us and add some better pictures, Click here for photo tips.

Obviously mislabeled, I am not sure what it is. It certainly cannot be both and I am not sure it is either.

Maybe, The question is "Normal for what?"
These are pictures of Ficus leaves.

Perhaps you will see something that looks familiar on those pages.. The little white flowers showing in the one photo look quite serissa-esque, But the leaves do not.
Is there any chance you could take it to a local nursery [Or the shop where the bonsai came from] and they could identify it?

It is going to be difficult to provide proper care without an ID you know.

I'll get in contact with my mate, whos plant it was & find out from there

As I previously wrote: The question is "Normal for what?"
Without knowing what it is, There is no way to possibly determine what is 'normal', Know what I mean?

As I understand it they have put on new growth, This would indicate to me that they have taken root.

Good idea 8), I hope it is effective.

Good luck,

Okay, I was looking at some serissa's & the name A Tree with a Thousand Stars just shouted at me, I'm pretty certain thats what it was called, I'll make sure tho

I wasn't sure that the cutting would just grow up with shoots coming from the main stem, I wasn't sure if the growth was ment to loo like a mini forest to start with (if you know what I mean)

I'm sorry if I sound thick, but I am a Noob :-)

The name may shout- but the pictures certainly do not. Though the flower does look serissa-like.
[The foliage shape does not say serissa to me at least. Also Serissa grow leaves in opposite pairs and it is difficult to tell in the pics but I am not seeing that here. Possibly, These could be compound leaves.

How big are the leaves? It is difficult to tell as there is nothing for scale in the picture...

Are the leaves I am seeing duplicates of what was on the tree? Any pictures of that available?

NO worries on 'newb-ness'..lol, I just keep asking until I figure it out ;).

I am not quite sure what you mean about the forest bit though...

I don't have any pics of the tree, but the leaves were smaller & pointier
on the tree & looked nothing like the ones on the cuttings

When I had the cutting there was 2 shoots with a leaf on each & now they have seemed to of multiplied if that makes any more sense ???

these are the best pics I could take, I used a wine bottle for scale, the leaves are about the size of a thumbnail !!!

MM,

Thanks for the new pictures, Upon rereading this thread and seeing:
...unfortunately it didn't make it, but a few shoots came from the soil so I repotted them.
[And considering the pictures of the foliage] It seems possible to me that you have something other than a duplicate of the tree.

[Even though the little flowers do appear quite Serissa-like, I have to ask this.]
Did the tree itself ever flower?

Was there any ground cover growing in the pot with the bonsai?

The sprouts you collected from the pot initially were they attached to the root system of the tree at all or were they entirely separate?

Just a few more questions for you. :)

There was no cover over the soil & the shoots came from the base of the trunk, my friend didn't have it long enough for it to flower I don't think he cared for it that much so it was in a bad state when I got it

MM,

Do the leaves have a rough texture to their surface, A bit like a cats tongue?

If so, You have Fukien Tea Tree sprouts growing there.

I should have thought of this earlier but I am on the cheap espresso today...;)

MM,

Your welcome,

I was really just guessing there as the leaves don't really remind me of anything...

This was an indoor tree correct?

I ask knowing full well that where your mate kept it might not have been the proper place for it...No offense meant by that but it DOES happen.

Did the shop give him any info on it at all? IE: Where to keep it.

I could just start guessing Oak, Ginko [Both trees that should live outside btw]...I don't know...

You said the cuttings you took were attached to the tree, Yet:

That's a tough one to figure, You know.

We had a falling out so don't talk much, they gave him a little book on how to care for Bonsai, it was only a basic how to care booklet, he didn't keep it near the window, just on his desk !!!

The guy that sold it didn't give him much info at all !!!

It wasn't a shop, but rather a private seller !!!

I found the culprit, it was a Cardamine hirsuta. commonly known as a Bittercress, part of the cabbage family :-(

Cabbage is most likely going to be a bit of chore to bonsai..
