first time grower, long time eater. to get right in to it, I recently purchased Walla Walla onion and green onion to grow from a garden center. they were by Bonnie Plants and sold in small tied up bundles of about 30. no other packaging. My question is, each little bulb in the bunch already began to sprout, with the majorty of them having a good 3/4 inches of green growth at the top. now after doing some research it seems because these onion sets have already sprouted, they wont produce a large onion at the bottom of the plant. but rather small seeds that can THEN be planted to grow a large onion.. but I also hear they're fine. I mean all the other sets where I bought them looked like this. not being able to find a definitive answer has left me seriously confused.. whats the real answer?hoping the experts here can help me out..

The variety is the key. Yes, Walla Walla will produce a bulb. The ones called "Green Onion" may not. They may be intended for use as green onions. Go ahead and plant them. Put them just deep enough to cover the little bulb. You can leave the green tips above ground.
The fact that they are sprouting just tells me they want to grow. It will have no bearing on bulbing.

OK, onion plants. They work well.
Yes, you can use the sets that have sprouted if you happen to have some. Yes, they will make good bulbs as long as they are not too large.
Plants: These were grown in Texas and shipped to Utah.

If you plant a larger dry onion it will certainly flower and then you can collect the seed to plant next year.
