And that is why you plant more onions than shallots.

No kidding! It looks like you could just go running into the mountains like Frauline Maria and the Von Trap family. Except these hills are alive with giant man-eating onions! :P

Thanks for your replies. Yes, we do live in a beautiful area. Here is a sunrise looking South from my garden plot. (Hope I don't get moderated for straying off topic. Well, I did say "garden".)

Onions are easy to grow. I encourage you all to give it a try. This wagon load of onions is from two varieties. Yellow Spanish Utah onions and Big Daddy onions. The yellow were planted from sets. The Big Daddy were planted from plants. I buy a bundle of plants from the local garden store. To be successful, plant early in the spring and feed them some nitrogen. They have frost resistance so you can plant them much earlier than beans or corn.

I have had very little trouble here with pests in the onions, but watch because there are some bugs (worms) that like to get in the bulbs. in some areas of the country.

Onions planted from seed will make nice green onions. If you like green onions, there are some bunching varieties that do not make a big bulb.

Deborah, yes, I weighed the big onion. It weighed 2 pounds 14 5/8 oz. I had quite a few that went over 2 lbs each.

That'd make a good addition to stew ! Or as onion rings.
I agree with Beanie about shallots-they're so mild I'd rather have onions too.

I'm only a container gardener but I get very nice "crops". There's always the fun of getting a harvest no matter how small. For me anyway.

Nice onions Jal. I harvested most of mine in early summer. Many were very large also. I will be planting them again in Jaunary.

On a scale of one to ten, how did your garden do this year. Mine was about 7 due to a very hot summer.

I reckon about a 7 also, but due to a much cooler season, especially early in the season. We only had two days that got above 90° F. The heat loving plants did not do very well. Any way, it seems I have always got a harvest of something, so it is worth the effort.

Funny how you got hot and we got cool.

Jal, I would have gladly traded for a few of your cool days. We had over 70 days with temps over 100 degrees and many at 110 degrees. My garden didn't appreciate it. We were down to 19 degrees the other morning and I asked my wife if she realizes it is more than 90 degrees cooler than only three months ago. I will be planting my tomato seeds under lights next week for my spring garden. We gardeners always hope for better weather the next year.

That onion is really huge! Congrats for that! :D
I have a question. I have a big purple onion that has sprouted because somebody didn't put it in the fridge. should I plant it? and the dirt in our garden is pretty hard. What should I add to it so they will grow better?

That onion will bloom and make seed if you plant it. It will not make another big bulb.
