Weeping ornamental cherry, out of control!

My husband and I bought a house one year ago and don't know what to do with this ridiculous weeping cherry. We pruned it minimally, but the shape seems "too far gone". It still weeps, but so many of the branches have started growing straight up, that my husband is threatening to cut it down! How long can a weeping cherry go untamed before it literally is landfill bound?

Hi Myfriendjessi,

No need to send it to the landfill. Your tree is grafted and the rootstock is taking over. You need to prune any shoots that are growing straight up. Take a look here.
