Potato box = no potatos

This year I built a potato box for the first time. As the plants grew I filled the box in with miracle grow gardening soil. I stopped adding dirt once my box was 4' deep. The plants themselves continued to grow and flower. They looked great. The plants now have died off so I went to get my potatoes. To my surprise there wasn't a one, zero, notta. A box full of roots.

How come I did not get any potatoes?

If the soil had too much nitrogen in it that will incourage lots of lush growth at the expense of tuber formation. For a good general treatment of growing potatoes check out

My mother would say that you probably planted them on a 'leaf day' - according to her lunar calendar, whereas they should have been planted on a 'root day'. I used to laugh it off, but she sure gets good results...
Still, I'm saying this with a twinkle in my eyes
