BONSAI SHOWS, EXHIBITS & CLUB ACTIVITIES

If your bonsai club/society has an upcoming local or regional show let's get the word out. Promote it here. Wherever it may be on the planet - we have readers worldwide who might be interested and would like to attend. They might not even know there is such an event nearby.

Please give the dates, locations, whether free or fee, and the name of the organization with contact info. Attach photos if you wish.

Promoting the art of bonsai can draw new participants and enthusiasts. Let's do it.

Tom,

I like your idea and am going to 'sticky' this thread in hope of some responses. I looked at the websites for both Phipps Conservatory and The Pittsburgh Bonsai Society but neither seem to have a show on their calendar.

The PBS does list this though.

May 21-22-Spring Bonsai Weekend...Annual event showcasing members' creations, along with vendors, workshops and the silent auction.

Many thanx for the responses so far - let's get some more posted onto the board. There are so many bonsai shows and exhibits all around that readers would like to know about. List as much info as possible. And, yes, inform us about your clubs too.

This is great!!!

Indianapolis Bonsai Club - AIRLAYERING CRABAPPLES

The trip to Pleasant View Nursery in Richmond Ind. will be this Saturday; April 30th. We plan to meet at 10:30 next to the Crabapple trees. (directions below) Please wear sturdy boots, the ground can be very uneven. Have a good carving Knife, gloves scissors and plastic sheets (very large freezer bags work well). A bucket would be helpful to soak the Spagnum moss. I will provide the root hormones and a ladder.

Part of the learning process is "seeing the future bonsai" in the tree. Paul and I will be willing to help you find these future bonsai, but look carefully. Not every airlayering takes, so consider doing more than one, but understand that this is a multiyear project.

DIRECTIONS: Address PLEASANT VIEW NURSERY, 3340 State Rd. 121 , Richmond Ind.

Take I 70 to exit 153 (state road 227). Exit rt. Right turn towards Richmond for one mile to Gaar road; on the left. Down Gaar road to second stop sign. Left on state road 121 approx. one half mile. Pleasant View is on the left. The easiest way to get to the trees is to drive past the nursery one quarter mile and make a left hand turn at the Calvery United Pentecostal Church parking lot. The dirt road that the trees are on is 200ft on the left. Make a left and go approx. 500ft. back to the trees.

I hope to see you there. Carl Wooldridge

mott (manofthetrees),

Great reminder!! Bill Valavanis's International Bonsai Arboretum, adjacent to his home, is a must see if you are in the area. AMAZING it is. And you won't go home without a new purchase of wonderful material.

The address is 1070 Martin Road, West Henrietta NY - just a bit south of Rochester, easy access from Thruway (I-90) exit #46.

See map here - https://www.internationalbonsai.com/files/1708315/uploaded/IB%20MAP%202010.pdf

ALSO in the region (a bit farther to the south) is Hollow Creek Bonsai see their site too. https://www.hollowcreekbonsai.com/

No one can say that we can not have high quality bonsai in the cold region of the Northeast. Just look around!

This sticky thread has been slowing a bit - let's let our readers know what the bonsai clubs are doing during the busy growing (and showing) season.

Mohawk Valley Bonsai Club in Utica, NY is but 6 years old this month. It is moving beyond infancy and 'kindergarten' and into first grade.

For the first time we will be participating in our regional Summer Arts Festival at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute with a bonsai exhibit on July 2nd-3rd. Demo's will be offered both days.

Location is on Genesee Street between downtown and Oneida Square. Sidewalk art displays, sculpture, music, food vendors, classic car show, children's activities, and oh yes - BONSAI.

See more at www.mvbonsai.com & www.mwpai.org

Hope to see you there! :D

Bonsai Society of Upstate New York sponsored a 2-day bus trip last weekend. The purpose was to visit (and shop at) three totally awesome bonsai nurseries in the Boston area and a guided tour of the Larz Anderson collection, Arnold Arboretum at Harvard.

For serious bonsai junkies, like me, it was heaven. Club members got the 'royal treatment'.

I got two hits (out of google) for Ohioan bonsai clubs. Lets wait & see whats under the two enquireies I made.

My local (Albany OH) indpendent fair does not have, nor does the Athen's state fair have a bonsai category. :(

Getting mine judged, isn't a really burning issue in my breast, but I'll suffer the indignity, in order to bring my hobby up to the general public.

tomc - I haven't seen bonsai exhibits at fairs, haven't looked I guess, even though our New York State Fair is in nearby Syracuse. Local club shows keep me busy through September and the fair is around Labor Day as well.

For clubs in Ohio you should check out the American Bonsai Society listing here - https://absbonsai.org/bonsai-club-directory/usa#OH
and also the Bonsai Clubs International listings.

In Ohio you will also find Frank Mahalic at Wildwood Gardens (see him on google)
and (I highly recommend) Dale Cochoy of Wild Things Bonsai and at the Brandywine Bonsai Society site. His pots are fabulous, the very best in my collection! AND he's such a cool dude. 8)

MOHAWK VALLEY BONSAI CLUB will conduct its first 'BONSAI SEARCH PARTY' Sat Sep 10th at George's Nursery on Kirkland Ave., Clinton, NY just off Route 5 (Seneca Turnpike).

Club members, friends and guests will gather at 12 noon to begin the 'search & rescue' for good potential material for future bonsai. As we know bonsai material does not need to start out as prime grade-a landscape specimens, but rather is often found to be the forlorn, neglected, perhaps broken cast-off materials that others have passed by in the back corners of the nursery. Treasures, jewels and good bargains await us. Late Summer/Fall specials beckon us. This will be great fun. MUGO PINE, JAPANESE MAPLE, COTONEASTER , JUNIPERS - the list goes on.

Then, in October, we will bring our new acquisitions to our next club meeting for an Open Workshop to get expert advice and perhaps some seasonally appropriate work with these future masterpieces. We've talked about this when planning club activities - and now we're doing it.

Who says bonsai is not fun? Make it fun. Advance your bonsai skills with other folks who enjoy it the way you do. Not happy with the local club? Start a new one. We did it - and we're having a blast!! AND a bit of notice too.

:P

Phipps Conservatory is hosting several workshops in the upcoming weeks. The restyling event, October, 22, seems the most interesting to me.
