Patio Pickers

Howdy,

My name is Josh and this is my first post. I recently bought a patio pickers box from Lowes and put it out on the patio of my third floor apartment. I planted six vegetable plants in this unit with organic potting mix. The box has a water tube that I pour water into every other day till it runs out of the overflow holes near the bottom along the sides. The patio seems to get sun in the afternoon towards the hotter part of the day.

My question is, do I need to put any dolomite or additional fertilizer in the soil? I want to stay completely organic so I am not sure if dolomite would be breaking this rule or not. Also, I was told to start watering daily when they get closer to full size and begin to produce veggies. I am new to this whole gardening thing so take it easy on me :-)

Welcome, Josh! Glad to have you aboard! :)

Do you remember what brand of potting mix you used? Most contain a slow-release fertilizer that lasts for the first 3 months. After that, there are different things you can use as fertilizer, depending on what plants you're growing.

Do your boxes have a water reservoir, or are they like regular plant containers, with holes in the bottom? If there is a water reservoir, I wouldn't recommend watering every day. For regular containers, you may have to water as much as twice a day, depending on how hot it gets in your area. :)

Hi Kisal,

Thanks for the reply. I don't remember what brand of potting mix it was, but it did say on the package that it self fertilized for a couple of months. It does appear to have a water reservoir since I add water down the tube and the over flow holes are a couple of inches higher than the bottom of the box indicating to me that it must hold a certain amount of water in the bottom.
