Winter Squash problem

Hey how is everyone, so glad alot of you are warming up - and I pray none of you are affected by the swelling Mississippi. Unbelievable. It has been deadly hot here in FL, really - I am complaining. It is making me crazy with worry for what I have growing.

Anyhow I have a Argonaut Butternut squash type growing they get huge.
Well one of them as you can see started to turn yellow at the top. The cut picture is the top part only that was yellow, I have not cut into the bottom as I hope it is alright and will eat it anyhow. Any clue what is happening or what I did? Notice what I did, as I am always making some mistake. Thanks again!

I think it just had a serious interruption to growth.

Many plants cannot grow when the temperature rises above about 85°F. Your mistake may have simply been not standing out in the baking sunshine misting the garden for hours on end. I'm not suggesting that you do this . . .

I really have no clue about growing winter squash in Florida. Notice that the [url=https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/giam/plants_and_grasses/fruits_vegetables/winter_squash.html]Florida Cooperative Extension information on winter squash in the garden[/url] is from outside the state with the exception of essentially no help on that banana squash page . BTW "something different in the garden" is malabar spinach (how it got on the page about winter squash might be some kind of a joke ).

You may be in a part of the state where growing this crop in the spring isn't a good idea. I'd call Coop Ex and demand to know !

Me being skeptical, I don't think it's a butternut. To me it looks more like a summer squash. Looking at the lines and speckles, I'm thinking zucchini.

Well it is per the seed packet a butternut. Gurneys sold them.

But never know what will happen once planted. I have others growing
and they are huge, and still green - the packet shows them ripening to a golden color. So not sure what this will look like inside. I appreciate you
at least looking - it almost look liked blossom end rot - but at the other end. It is hot to, so no telling.

I, too, question whether you really got butter-nut seed. To my limited knowledge, butternuts are the standard tan color their whole way thorough.

Is the yellow part hard or soft?

Not knowing ANYTHING about it, doesn't the hollow cavities look like uneven growth... Maybe moisture levels? I think digitS is onto something here.

Could you please post a picture of the fruit on the vine. I'm curious if all the fruit is misshaped.

I maybe funny, but I did look it up before adding my comment. I'm looking at the link again and the lines and speckles do match, but the shape? Anyway, I'm probably wrong again.

I will get one this afternoon, I am so afraid to touch anything - afraid it will fall off. They are big and they are dark green. It is funny the picture on the site shows them a Golden color when ripe and I wonder - how long does that take. Anyhow will get one later today. Thanks

about 140 days. I can't grow them here, not a long enough season.

Well this is the best photo I can take of one. My garden is in a small odd space.. I put a regular zucchini next to it to show size, wish I could grow those, I have to buy them. The dread SVB just arrived this week and it is
pretty much downhill from here. I also wrap all my squashes in tulle to keep them out, it does help alot. They mostly just kill the plants instead of sucking the life out of the veggie. Anyhow there you go....

But I am also prone to believe the person who said they may be some other kind of seed. I planted a bunch of what I thought were GOLD Marigolds - there were short ones and tall ones all in the golden color mix - I have the packages and I know what they show, this is what I got... Is this a marigold, they are about 4-5 feet tall and all purple.

I should really be happy anything is growing. I appreciate your all looking.

Good question on the squash. Let it grow and see what it does. It is the wrong color for any butternut I have grown.


Flowers do not look at all like marigolds.

The flowers are Cosmos, one of my faves. Definitely not marigolds.

you know, the squash I've seen labeled 'tahitian butternut' does have speckles like that (though the primary color when ripe is still butternut-tan)...

that is a strange looking squash. Does resemble a zucchini a little.

I can't believe it, my husband was right, he said that was not a Marigold, go figure. Well it certainly is pretty and I liked the color, I was just expecting thos golden yellow color marigolds. Thanks for clearing that up.
