What is it?

It's got a wooden stem and grew from a seedling of some sort into this... thing.

I didn't plant it in my garden, so it wasn't intentional.

Anyone have any idea of what it is? I need to remove it from my garden to somewhere safe, so what would be the best way to do so, and how should I care for it ? It's got to go since it's right next to a lettuce seedling.

The leaves need to unfurl for proper ID.

Don't worry about the lettuce, the wooden stem suggests some kind of a woody tree or shrub, and their roots go much deeper than where the lettuce roots are likely to hang out. You'll probably end up harvesting the lettuce after a while (Personally, I would sacrifice the lettuce to find out what this seedling is )

Or, once identified and you decide to keep or not, you can cut the unlucky plant at the ground level so as not to disturb the other one's roots.

OH! Those are the leaf pods? I'm such a dork, and thought they were going to be flowers of some sort! Okay. I will leave it in the ground for now, and see what happens :) I just don't know how to even start with caring for a mystery tree like this. Ironically, I noticed it on earth day

So, keep an eye on it for now and post another pic when the leaves open. Got it!

And I don't have the heart to cut it off. If it's growing out there, it must have a place of some sort in nature/my backyard ;)

one of the leaf pods opened up yesterday, so I went back out to take a photo of it today!

Is it something exciting, like an apple tree, or something boring, like an oak? Which might still be kinda exciting, honestly, but not as much :D

You bet I am!

last year, my garden was epic fail. I forgot to eat the tomatoes before they went bad, all my broccoli, lettuce and Brussels sprouts bolted, my zucchinis died, and my peppers each gave me one golf ball sized pepper.

This year, stuff is growing in my garden boxes! and I want to know what every single of of them are

In reality, I'm just so happy that things are growing, that I want to take care of everything the best I possibly can. I don't know what to do for this little guy, really, unless I know what he is :D

and yeah, you can tell me what it isn't and I'll be fine with that too :D
