Humidity dome questions

Hi ya folks, new on the forums here. Seems like a pretty knowlagable place :D I tried searching for the topic of humidity domes.... but didn't see the exact answer I was looking for.

Been gardening for about 4 years now and the gardening bug has definitely hit me after the first year.

This year we have expanded our inside starting and garden areas quite a bit.

We have an indoor greenhouse going for seed starting. 4 (72) trays are under way with domes and heating mats.

Last year I guessed, but this year I would like to know the proper answers to:

We take off the heating mats after the seeds have mostly germinated and the seedlings pop through and we dome with vents until we get about 1-2 inches in height.

We had not bad results the past two years doing this.

I guess the question is - when should the heating pad come off? And how long do you guys keep them domed?

After we remove the domes we usually put a small fan in the greenhouse on low to get some air flowing and harden up the stems a bit. We usually wait till they get big enough to transplant once..... then see if the frost outside is done, and start hardening up the plants outside here and there before they get fully transplanted into the garden.

So domes and heating mats - whats the proper way - if we aren't doing it right.

Sounds like you are doing well. I usually leave seedlings on the heat mat at least until they get their first true leaves. After that they come off to make room for something else to be germinated.

I don't use humidity domes at all. To me they seem like more trouble than they are worth and I start at least 500 plants from seed every year. If you are using them, definitely don't leave them on too long and be sure to vent them.

Otherwise your set up sounds nice with a greenhouse and fan. I just start all my seeds in my basement...

Agreed with RG on all points, but I do use the domes until they have sprouted. Once sprouted I remove the dome.

The reason being is the potential for drying-out before sprouting. It could hapopen after they sprout I guess, but for me it has been a problem while waiting for germination.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure that I'm doing it half way right.

My greenhouse is in the basement. I will have to figure out how to post some pictures........

My only worry this year is the stink bugs. Seems they are really getting bad. Last year was terrible and this year will probably be worse.

Is it a greenhouse if it is in the basement? I sort of thought it was in the nature of greenhouses to be outdoors and collecting solar heat (I.e. "the greenhouse effect").

Stinkbugs will be outside when the warm weather hits - trying to eat my garden I'm sure! After I transplant

Hmmmm.... Technically still a greenhouse lol, I could call it a basement house I guess. Its there so I can control the heat better, without heating the entire basement.

Its a 500 watt grow light. Last two years has worked really well. Its extremely bright. I start it even before germination, about 16 hours a day with 8 hours of dark.

I wanted to do more of a rack system like you - but then every rack would have to have its own light. Is that what you did? One light per shelf?

Nice system forceten.

Do you grow with hydro under that light as well?

So then they come out of the sweat chamber as soon as germinated? It's just like a giant humidity dome, to keep the humidity up while the seeds are sprouting?

Where do they go after that, they won't be ready for potting up yet?

Rainbow,
They stay in the greenhouse for several more weeks. The pots on the lower right are the little tomatoes. There is a waterbed heating pad underneath them. This system is all new to me. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. :D

I like it, do you have an auto watering mister system at all, or is everything by hand right now?

I've taken over the OP topic again. :(

forceten,
Take a look at this post. Everything is water by hand except, my bottom watering shelf.

It looks great... you are operating on a scale well beyond me. For someone who lives 4 miles from downtown and has a 1/3 acre property much of which is hillside, I start pretty many plants from seed, but you are on a commercial scale. I wouldn't have any idea about suggestions, but it doesn't look like you need any.

We give all the excess to the local soup kitchens. they love the fresh produce and it helps feed the homeless....

We use to give all the extras to all the neighbors, but I rather like giving to the homeless shelters that have kitchens. Thats why we increased our gardens this year, mostly for them, but mostly cause I like growing!

What ya do with all your growings eric? Since it seems like you produce way too much just for yourself?
