Tree and Bush I.D.

Hi all I've got some plants in my front yard that I don't know the name of and was wondering if you could give me a hand I.D'ing them.

This first one is what I think is a Heavenly bamboo... but not completely sure. Can anyone confirm this?

This One is a Bush that blooms fairly large full light pink flowers during the spring.

This is the huge tree in my front yard. It is pretty massive and sheds all of its leaves yearly.

I'd say you're right about the top one being nandina (heavenly bamboo). #2 looks like an azalea, and the pink spring flowers would fit. Not sure about the tree...must be something we don't have over here in the northeast.

Great so it is confirmed that the first one is Heavenly bamboo.

I googles Azalea and the flowers don't match up. I found a photo of what the flower kinda looks like though by looking up "pink bush flowers" in google image.. and they kinda look like a camellia flower but I'm not so sure the leaves match up?

As far as the tree it seems to be a mystery to everyone I ask lol I'm hoping with time someone will be able to I.D. it

Try looking at a few double azaleas. I still think the leaves look right.

Hmm ... you know what the double azeleas look closer to the flower I remember the bush producing. I'll have to get a good picture of them next time the bush is in bloom.

Is the second photo a rhododendron? Its a pretty big shrub in the photo for an azalea and the leaves are pretty big, the flowers and leaves would be large on most rhododendrons unless its a dwarf variety. A double flower seems likely if the bloom is similar to the last photo, some rhododendron blooms are very ruffly looking.

Hello, BewilderedGreenyO.o.

I used to live in Northern California. I went digging in the Sunset Western Garden Book. Does your tree get fragrant, cream-colored flower plumes in the Spring? If so, it is probably California Buckeye ( Aesculus californica ). It also gets pear shaped fruit that split to reveal shiny brown seeds in the fall. I hope that helps. Take care.

If it is a native, more likely Buckeye, but it maybe a eurasian.

DD: Thanks for your I.D's 1. is definitely Heavenly Bamboo so you were spot on there. 2. I'm still waiting on to see if I can get pictures to post of its blooms but it could possibly be a Camelia. 3. Not a horse chestnut. Mine has different leaves and doesn't produce any spiky fruit.

Thanks Ken for trying to I.D my tree... however that definitely isn't it. My tree doesn't get any blooms. Just green leaves which fall off to mostly bare in the winter. Actually I really haven't noticed any sort of fruit or nut or anything on it.

Finally an Update! Winter has brought flowers to my bush! Yay! *And* I took pictures!! Winter has also brought tough times for a lot of my plants as we have been getting a lot of rain for socal as well as a lot of wind and cold temps (well cold for socal lol ) Anyway! Here are the photos of the bush that I have taken. I took many in hopes that it will help in I.D'ing the bush.. I found it odd however that I not only found smooth edged leaves but also spikey edged leave on the same bush G'luck in the I.D's

Yay! So It seems I have a Camellia or Double Camellia! Whats with the different types of leaves? Is that common?

My deep pink single camellia has serrated leaves. According to what I've read, different cultivars of camellias can have edges ranging from smooth to serrate. Perhaps yours is a hybrid, and the variation in leaves is a reflection of that? That's the best I can offer.

The look of camellia leaves may change as they get older. I would not be concerned if some look slightly different.

The type/form of camellia bloom that BewilderedGreenyO.o shows is called a Formal Double (other type/form names are Single, Semi-double, Anemone, Peony, Rose Form Double and Higo). The type of camellia bloom on your pictures is a Peony Bloom.
