It looks like something in the carrot family... HOGWEED popped into my head, but I've no idea if that's correct.

Hogweed is what comes to mind to me, too. Be careful and wear long rubber gloves when you remove it - the sap is really caustic.

thanks for your replies - I figured it's some kind of weed, though I'm not certain its hogweed. its currently ~6 feet tall and has not flowered.

My immediate thought was some type of sambucus (elderberry). I have a deep bronze one in my yard whose name I'm forgetting right now. The foliage is almost identical, but a different color. I think the foliage looks too finely cut for the hogweed that I've seen. Just thought this might jog someone's memory.
