Romaine

What is the best way to harvest my Romaine... It looks ready.. Should I pinch the leaves so that it continues to grow? Or cut them out?

It depends where you are located. If you are in zone 5 or higher, the lettuce season is about over and you might as well cut the whole head before it bolts. However, if you live in a colder climate, you may be able to just pick the leaves and then allow more to grow.

I pick the whole plant. I always have enough that I will never get it all used anyway before it bolts.

I didn't get romaine this year. Bugs got to it, no matter how much I watched over the garden.

Darceyoh,

No worries, this year is not over. Grow lettuce this fall and kale, chard, broccoli, collards ....etc............... :D

Use floating row cover like Reemay if you need extra protection.

When you say tang, do you mean bitter. :?: Sounds like the heat has gotten to it. I think you may have waited to long. :( You will see even more milk substance when it bolts.
