The last photos show weeds quickly moving in and dirt mounds that I was unsucessful at, though I have started back at the drawing board with cucumbers, cantelope, honeydew, and 1 watermelon vine. Wish me luck!

Thank you jal_ut aka Green Thumb, I just played around with the thread a bit more a figured out how to further document my photos!

I don't what kind of camera you are using, but try next time to take the images when it's not so dark out. That way you won't need to use a flash and your camera will do a better job of focusing. Things will also look less washed out. Let me know if you need any help. Some of the pics look great though. Just avoid using the flash if you can.

What kind of soil are you in? Good luck with the grow and keep taking pictures!

Looking GREAT! You must be growing bush beans which won't be growing into twining shoots but grow about knee high and flop over from the weight of the beans. The bean pods are VERY GOOD at hiding from you when you're trying to harvest them. I usually pick all the ones I see, then sort of "flop" the foliage over to the other side to find more and leave them that way so the other side can get some sun. Every other day, pick "flop" pick, pick "flop" pick...

BJ, I have a FinePix Fujii (S7000) camera. I tried to take the pictures both during the day and late evening, with and without flash, and I had trouble. I could use some tips, thank you. I live in zone 6a I do believe but I'm not sure about the soil type I have, though I tried to ammend it a bit using dried leaves and a small bit of lime. Next year I will invest in getting the soil tested. It is amazing how costly the whole project has gotten.

For your first garden, I say it looks really good! Weeds can creep up on ya quick, gotta keep after them. I can be bad about that. Looked at one of my flower beds the other day and it looked like I had planted my flowers in the lawn. You'll be eating those tomatoes any day now. I am jealous.

You mentioned a worm compost bin, but be sure to start a compost pile with your weeds, grass clippings, and other garden waste. Check out the Compost sticky at the top of the Compost Forum for details.

Work with whatever BROWNS you can get for now, then add as much fall leaves as you can get your hands on later.

You'll have a whole mound of FREE (or nearly free ), top quality soil amendment and fertilizer by spring.

Applestar, actually I have so-called started a couple of compost piles. Neither of which I have covered or contained so I'm not sure what to expect. The oldest one, I've turned a few times and it appears to be getting more dense so I think it is working. The hubby is not so impressed with me with a "pile of leaves sitting in the yard so I'm thinking of just mowing over that one, and this is how I got rebellious and invested in the worms! About those green beans, I only have a few on the vine but they have an ideal size to them. I guess I should wait until there's enough for a serving to start picking them? Thank you guys for the compliment. It helps to keep me motivated!

With beans you need to keep picking them before they are past prime or they can get stringy. Also, the plant will stop making more. What I do when there's not enough is to either use them as additions in salads or soups or wash, string, and pop them in a zip bag to freeze. when I have enough, I use these right away as they were not blanched for long storage.
