This is my first sunflower...

.. and this is the problem.

I noticed this morning that the stem is damaged, can anyone tell me why this would happen, how am I suppose to prevent this and what is the solution to this problem?

I think it needs immediate attention because the damaged stem just might not support the heavy flower.

If the plant is otherwise healthy, I would suggest inserting a stake into the soil near the stem and using plant ties to secure the stem to it. The length of the stake should be appropriate for the height you expect the sunflower to get.

I have no idea what would have caused such damage, but perhaps another member will recognize it. Sorry. :(
