What is packaged garden soil used for? --UK

I saw a packet of Westland premium garden soil on sale at Homebase. Is this just to be spread in the garden to enrich the soil? Does it need to be added to compost in containers? Would appreciate your advice.

Not unless it was something special, which would have made it a 'supplement' or 'soil amendment', rather than actual soil. In general, packaged garden soil is used for growing plants in containers.

Containers don't drain as well as open ground, so the soil must be specially formulated to enhance drainage, while maintaining the proper pH and other attributes of healthy soil. That's about the best way I can explain it. :)

As Kisal says quality garden soil is very useful if your own soil is of a poor quality.
Especially when it comes to planting up some pot plants.
Potting compost is ok but some plants can get rather top heavy...Fuchsia for instance...when they are grown in peat based composts.
It also makes a better retainer of nutrients for larger hungry plants.
