chinese elm

I have a small chinese elm bonsai and I always thought it was an indoor tree in my climate (New Jersey zone 5). But recently I read that it can be hardy in zone 5. This winter the tree has lost its leaves and grown them back several times. It seems to be consfused. Could this be because it needs to be outside or in my garage? Thanks for the help.

I have tried elms both ways, as tropicals and outdoor trees and I find them happier the latter way. Sounds like you have avoided dormancy altogether; read the dormancy article on the front of the site for some clarification...

Yea, I think I'm going to try putting it in my garage next year and see if it does better. Thanks for the help.
