Will Cutting Back Damaged Hostas Improve Growth?

Will I get a new growth of my hostas if I cut them back (SEVERELY) at this time? Between the deer and the July hailstorm, they are sad looking.

I don't think that it is possible to kill hostas though next years growth may be affected.

yeah, ordinarily you would cut your hostas off at ground level once there's been a frost and the leaves turn brown. By doing it now, the crown/root won't have had quite as much time to store energy, so next year's plant may not be quite as big as it would have been. It depends on how much growing season you have left, whether you will get much new growth this year, but it should come back next year.
