Companion plant or death sentence?

I have a big mature apple tree in my yard and have been reading about companion plants for it (to plant underneath). Nasturtium came up and I do have a bunch of seeds from last year (grew it in a pot) but it is the vine nasturtium. I think it would be beautiful climbing up the apple tree but I'm unsure if it will suffocate the tree. Anyone have any ideas or info?

Hi Mother...
Nasturtium, clematis, even a lovely rose, would look great in your tree.
All of these can be cut back if needed, but on an old mature tree I think they would be lovely.

Nasturtium is a small, delicate vine. Won't harm a mature apple tree. On the other hand climbing nasturtium climbs with the aid of twining leaves. It needs something to climb that the leaves can twine around.

I worked in an apple orchard once, don't know anything about companion plants for apple trees but I know how to make your tree produce 15 bushels of apples.
