Anna Apple Tree Bark problem

I just noticed that my anna apple tree trunk looks bad and I have no idea what is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sports..
It looks as if your tree has been de-barked by some animal.
Rabbits or similar. Luckily the Cambrian layer looks as if it is still intact so the tree should recovor but you need to get some form of protection around it as soon as possible. A screen of fine chicken wire etc.
