Holes in apple trees

We bought a house last year and this spring have noticed that there are quite a few holes in our apple tree. There's a large one in the main trunk, and then some in the base of some of the larger branches. The tree is very old (my guess 50+ years). Do the holes indicate that its nearing its final days? If so, is there anything we can do to prevent it from dying/falling over? It still is very sturdy, and last fall gave us a lot of fruit.

Help!?!? :?

Do the holes go all the way to through the tree?

If your tree isn't showing any other signs of deficiency they should be fine. Though, you may wish to talk to a local arbourist.

nope - they don't go right through. I will take your advice and speak to an arbourist.

thanks! :)

Sounds like a plan. Good luck
