POWDERY MILDEW ON ALL OVER THE BARK ON MY APPLE TREES

Should I call in an arborist? Or is there something I can do to treat this whitish powery substance spreading over my trees, I have four, two don't seem to be affected yet. They are very old and beautiful trees, to the extent that I do not even know the the variety. They are certainly eaters, small and rosy when in season. :(
Thanks Claire

I think this is WOOLY APHID
"White fluffy areas on the bark, looks like fungus Woolly Aphid"
I got this by googling for "white fungus on apple tree bark"
Here's a likely description:

For control, *I* would try to find an organic/non-chemical solution. Maybe someone with more experience can suggest something.
Good luck.

ed: OK, here's one link with some control methods:

Interesting that so far, the top of the search list have been UK sites -- is this a common problem there?
That's all I've time for -- gotta make some breakfast!

This seems to me to be more like a woolly aphid infestation. These will spend the winter in cracks in the bark leaving behind the white waxy, woolly substance created when they were active. On further inspection if you think this is the case I would advise using a controlled but forceful water jet such as used for car and path cleaning. This will clear the secretions away and possibly some of the aphids. Not a cure but I don't want to recommend chemicals. It can be repeated while the tree is dormant and will go some way to solving the problem - it would not do to force spray young foliage.
