New vines to prune or not to prune

Hi all!

So I just planted 2 cowarts muscadine vines and want them to grow up an arbor. They both have a fork and are growing kind of crazy. So my question is should I let them be for now and not shock them further or should I start pruning now and pick my primary trunk?

My friend who owns a winery and grows grapes says let them grow. Pruning can be done early in the spring if you are interested in growing grapes for a crop. We have grapes growing up and over the top of a pergola and rarely prune them other than to keep the structure from disappearing. We do not grow for the grapes but for the shade. Most grape vines can be trained easily by pruning but if you want them to climb a structure let them get to where you want them to be.
