How do you trellis your grapes?

I was planning on trellising them horizontal, but I just read something that said to have them go vertical. which do you do and does it really matter?

Just about every grape vine I've ever seen has the main trunk growing vertically for up to about 6 ft. high with branching that grows horizontal to the ground starting about 3 ft. or so off the ground.

Well, shoot. I didn't know that and I put them so they'd go along the outside of my garden fence. if I post a picture, could someone perhaps help me figure out how I could work a trellis into this area?
